Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about how the diagnostic tools work, what the results mean, and how organizations and educators use them.

About the Tools

The Evans Learning Labs toolkit is a library of structured diagnostic assessments covering individual leadership, team effectiveness, and organizational performance. Each tool uses behavioral descriptions rather than generic rating scales, scores performance across five distinct domains, and delivers results immediately on completion, including scored domain analysis, a perception-versus-reality comparison, priority development areas, and specific action steps tied to your responses.
Personality assessments tell you what type you are - a fixed characteristic. The Evans Learning Labs tools diagnose how you are currently performing across specific behavioral domains, identify your most important development gaps, and give you concrete actions to close them. The results can change as your behavior changes. You can retake any tool after doing the development work and measure whether your scores actually moved.
Every tool is built on peer-reviewed research in leadership development, organizational behavior, applied psychology, and management science. The virtuous leadership and organizational integrity tools align with established frameworks of virtuous business principles. The behavioral description methodology is grounded in research on assessment validity and the limitations of self-report rating scales. Full research foundations are documented in the Research section of this site.
Most tools take between 15 and 25 minutes to complete. Before you begin, you are asked to predict your own scores - a brief process that adds about five minutes but significantly increases the value of the results. The prediction comparison is often the most revealing part of the entire assessment.
Yes. Every tool includes free lifetime retakes. Your history is saved to your dashboard so you can see how your scores change over time. The intended use is to take a baseline, do the development work indicated by your results, retake the assessment at 60 to 90 days, and measure whether your scores moved.

How the Assessments Work

Rather than asking you to rate yourself on a 1-to-5 scale - which produces highly subjective and often inflated results - each question presents four or five descriptions of actual behavior. You choose the one that most honestly reflects how you consistently operate. This forces specificity and produces more accurate, actionable results than a rating scale approach.
Before answering any questions, you are asked to predict your own scores across each domain and overall. After completing the assessment, you see a visual comparison of your predictions against your actual scores. The gap between how you expect to perform and what your behavioral responses reveal is often the most valuable diagnostic output. Research consistently shows that leaders who overestimate their performance in a domain are less likely to invest in developing it.
Each assessment evaluates performance across five distinct domains. Each question is scored on a 1.0 to 5.0 scale based on which behavioral description you select. Domain scores are the average of the five questions in that domain. Score ranges are labeled: 1.0–1.9 Critical Gap, 2.0–2.9 Developing, 3.0–3.9 Functional, 4.0–4.5 Strong, 4.6–5.0 Exceptional.
Recommendations are calibrated to your specific domain scores and to the behavioral descriptions you selected. A score of 2.4 in a domain produces different recommendations than a score of 3.6 because the gap being addressed is different. Recommendations are also prioritized by domain, with the lowest-scoring areas identified as your most important development opportunities.
There are no correct answers in the sense of a test. The tool measures your current behavioral patterns - not your aspirations or what you think the right answer is. The most valuable results come from the most honest answers. Choose the description that reflects your consistent experience, including your difficult days - not your best days.

Results and Reports

Results are delivered immediately on completion and include: an overall score and profile label, domain-by-domain scored results with visualization, a perception-versus-reality comparison, a self-awareness profile based on prediction gaps, identification of your two highest-priority development areas with specific action steps, and a downloadable PDF report.
Yes. Every assessment generates a downloadable PDF report including your full results, domain analysis, perception-versus-reality comparison, and development recommendations. Your results history is also permanently saved to your dashboard.
A score in the 3.0–3.9 range (Functional) means you are performing adequately in that domain with real gaps present. A score in the 4.0–4.5 range (Strong) means this is a genuine area of capability with identifiable opportunities to go further. The most important number in your results is usually your lowest domain score - that is where the highest-leverage development opportunity lies.
Yes. Your results are private to your account and are never shared with employers, institutions, or other users without your explicit consent. If you are completing an assessment as part of an organizational program, the specific terms of data sharing for that program are disclosed before you begin.

Purchasing and Access

Each assessment is priced per seat. You purchase access to a specific tool, complete it, and receive full results including all future retakes at no additional cost. There are no subscription fees, no recurring charges, and no time limits on your access. Organizational volume pricing and institutional licensing are available for teams and academic programs.
Bundles group tools that address related dimensions of performance. Purchasing a bundle provides access to all included tools at a discounted rate compared to purchasing each individually. All tools in a bundle include lifetime retakes.
Yes. The Organizational Performance Assessment is available at no charge and is a complete assessment - not a demo or limited preview. It is a good starting point if you are unsure which tools are most relevant to your situation.
An account is required to save your results, access your history, and download your PDF report. If you complete an assessment without an account, you will be prompted to create one before your results are displayed. Creating an account is free.

For Organizations

Organizations deploy these tools as a pre-program baseline before leadership development initiatives, as part of talent review and succession planning conversations, as new manager onboarding instruments, and as ongoing development tools. Because individuals control their own results, the data is more honest than tools where results are reported directly to a manager or HR system.
Yes. With an organizational license, you can assign specific tools to individuals or groups, set timelines for completion, and receive aggregate reporting on domain scores across your team or cohort. Individual scores remain private to each participant unless they choose to share them.
No. These tools are designed as development instruments, not performance evaluation tools. Using diagnostic self-assessment data as a performance metric compromises the honesty of the data and undermines the development purpose of the tool. The appropriate use is to support individual development conversations - not to evaluate, rank, or make high-stakes decisions about people.
Organizational licensing is available for teams, departments, and organizations deploying these tools across multiple people. Volume pricing is available for groups of five or more. Contact us through the organizational licensing page to discuss your specific situation, volume, and deployment model.
Yes. Evans Learning Labs supports LTI 1.1 integration for institutional deployments, allowing assessments and eLearning courses to be accessed directly within your organization's existing learning management system. Contact us through the organizational licensing page for technical integration details.

For Educators and Academic Institutions

Evans Learning Labs tools are used in MBA programs, leadership courses, executive education, doctoral programs, and coach training curricula - as a self-assessment assignment anchoring a reflective essay or leadership development plan, as a pre- and post-program measurement instrument, and as a classroom discussion anchor that generates specific, named data rather than general impressions.
The tools are built on peer-reviewed research foundations, use academically defensible methodology, and produce output specific enough to support meaningful classroom discussion and written analysis. The virtuous leadership and organizational integrity tools map directly to established frameworks of virtuous business principles, making them natural complements to curricula built on those foundations.
Academic licensing provides cohort access to specified tools for a defined term at volume pricing appropriate for student use. Individual results go to student accounts, and aggregate cohort data is available to the faculty member or program administrator. Contact us through the academic licensing page to discuss your program's specific needs.
Yes, with appropriate framing. The tools work well when students are asked to evaluate their experience from internships, part-time work, extracurriculars, or team projects. The self-awareness and career clarity tools are particularly well-suited for undergraduate leadership development curricula.
